“Political debate should bring out detail on policy, and allow for public insight on the political process. Either side should ideally be debating for the good of the people. These days, it’s about pushing a party’s agenda over anything else. And that is never best for the country. Still isn’t.”
What do you think of the media’s portrayal of women?
You know, it really depends on the woman. At the moment, we are living in a time where all the wrong things are being focused on in the media–man or woman. The so-called “media’s values” have dramatically changed. I feel because of that, as women, it’s our responsibility, it’s up to US in which direction we would like to be seen. Almost like, we can’t change them, but we can change us. Lead. Not give the media the opportunity to keep women in a box.
Have you seen any changes in the political landscape for women over the past few years? What are they?
Most definitely. There are more women in politics now than there ever were. We are leaders and policy makers. Look at our supreme court. Not only are there three women, but minority women to boot. This is an exciting time. I see a female president in my lifetime.
Do you feel the extreme left and right wings of U.S. politics are destroying the United in United States, or is it just healthy debate?
Yes, I do. It is far from a healthy debate. Political debate should bring out detail on policy, and allow for public insight on the political process. Either side should ideally be debating for the good of the people. These days, it’s about pushing a party’s agenda over anything else, and that is never best for the country.
Can you tell us about one of the biggest challenges in your life that you think helped you become the person you are today?
I think it’s been the culmination of many challenges in my life that have shaped me. Hard to say what the biggest was. I only know it hasn’t been easy, and I’m grateful for that.
Do today’s young people face a bigger challenge than you did?
Not bigger. Different. I only hope they are the kind of challenges that build character.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Grow, but don’t change.
If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Aung San Suu Kyi. I wrote something about her life I would love to get her opinion on.
What is your favorite book (fiction or nonfiction)?
The Missing Piece by Shelf Silverstein.
