Flip through Vogue or the Journal of the American Medical Association? For most of us, it’s a no-brainer. For surgeon turned shoe designer Taryn Rose, opting for the fashion bible was the smartest thing she ever did.

“I saw a lot of women who, after surgery, needed shoes that were beautiful and healthy for their feet,” says Rose, who has boutiques in California and New York (at 60th and Madison). “And I was blessed with a good eye, a good sense of proportion, color, and style.” The key to her luxury Italian-leather footwear: “I put in volume where it’s needed and take it out where it’s not.” The key to her success: “Determination, intelligence, and a sense of humor.” Oh, and an attention to detail. “I delegate but don’t abdicate.”
