2015 Honoree

Christiane Lemieux

Founder, Creative Director, DwellStudio

“I have learned that the only way to be truly happy is to live your own life on your terms and find your own path. Everything else is living someone else’s dream.”

Who inspires you the most?

I am inspired by people who make a difference in people’s lives. I have the distinct privilege of being on the board of Every Mother Counts and seeing Christy Turlington Burns change the word with grace and intelligence. I am doubly in awe watching her do it as she raises her children beautifully and juggles all the things we do as working mothers.

What do you now know about yourself that you wish you knew
ten/fifteen/twenty [depending on age] years ago?

That I am the master of my destiny – not society, not my parents, not anyone else. I have learned that the only way to be truly happy is to live your own life on your terms and find your own path. Everything else is living someone else’s dream.

Fill in the blank: You can never have enough _____.

Sleep–believe me. It’s THE game changer.

What City best describes your personality?

New York – which is why I moved here. It’s home… Energetic, inspiring, chaotic, original, inspiring and takes no prisoners – I just wanted to tap into all of that energy. This city is my constant muse.

What gets you through even the toughest days and what are you most
grateful for?

My children – they are the reason I keep pushing forward. I want them to have the best example and know that anything is possible. I am grateful that they call me on everything now and force me to be present in life and in their life. They are forcing me to look for that elusive balance. They make me want to turn off my phone.

What socio-political women’s issue do you care about the most? Do you feel that women are typically presented fairly in the media? Why or why not?

As a board member of Every Mother Counts, we work tirelessly for maternal health. 93% of maternal deaths can be prevented. When a mother dies – the ripple effect through the family and community is huge. I think it’s possible to change the world one success story at a time.

As for women in the media – I think it’s contextual. Each story has a
different place for women in the media. I do hate stereotypes. At the core
We are all people and should be seen as such.

What is your best read? Favorite character you would most like to be?

I read voraciously but I just finished a biography of Amelia Earhart “Amelia Lost” – I would be Amelia if I had a chance. I just love adventure. I also read a great account of Gerald and Sarah Murphy in Paris in the 1920’s. “Everybody War So Young” – I think I would like to try that too.

What was your best decision to date?

My best decision was to start my business DwellStudio.

Worst decision?

To take in unveiled investors early on. I have learned a lot on my journey!

Within the past few years, social media has exploded. How can women use it to market themselves without seeming narcissistic?

I think social media is a useful tool. It’s all about how you see yourself and your personal brand. Be authentic to yourself and your wont
communicate narcissism.

Write a fortune you’d like for all women to receive in a fortune cookie.

You are perfect. Just the way you are.

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?

I would love the power to heal. I would like that finger that ET has. If
you are sick I will touch you and make you well – nothing would give me
greater joy.
