“I think that today’s young people face a world with even less of the restrictions on what’s possible. My young female cousins, in particular, all seem very energized, very athletic, and without boundary. I love that!”

Do today’s young people face a bigger challenge than you did?

I think that today’s young people face a world with even less of the restrictions on what’s possible. My young female cousins, in particular, all seem very energized, very athletic, and without boundary. I love that!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

When you’re going through hell, keep going…and those to whom much is given, much is expected.

What is your favorite book (fiction or nonfiction)?

The Alchemist by Paolo Coehlo.

Have you seen any changes in the political landscape for women over the past few years? What are they?

Ninety two years after the 19th Amendment was ratified, the numbers of women in positions of power in U.S. politics still isn’t commensurate with the level of women’s influence in society. I think that the field is opening up for more women to make their mark on the political landscape and that it is absolutely necessary for women to push for those elected and appointed positions at local, state, and federal levels. If you don’t speak for yourself, someone else will do it for you. I report on the State Department for CBS News and travel with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She is America’s face and voice abroad. In virtually every city that we travel to, the Secretary talks publicly about including more women in positions of power. I think that engaging with those women helps to understand what the social fabric of those societies is like and what’s happening in daily life. If you exclude half of the population, you’re not going to get 100% of the picture. Two other American Presidents have made the decision to appoint a female Secretary of State. I do think that those appointments are not only symbolically important, but that they’re strategically significant to how the U.S. engages in the world.
